HHS Class of 1961 Scholarship
Our proposal to create an HHS ’61 Scholarship has been approved and accepted by the Town of Hingham Treasurer and the Hingham Scholarship Committee. Our first scholarship will be awarded in the Spring to a member of the HHS class of 2027. The description of the HHS ‘61 Scholarship as it will appear in the students’ Graduation Booklet is:
THE HINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1961 SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a Hingham High School senior who will attend an accredited trade school, a 2-year community college or a 4-year college/university for outstanding service to his/her high school class, to Hingham High School itself, or to the Hingham community. The scholarship commemorates both our fond memories of HHS and the many contributions to HHS by the members of the class of 1961.
The Scholarship Committee requires that a new scholarship have at least $5,000 in committed, initial funding. Eight classmates generously committed and contributed $6,000 to meet that requirement for the HHS ’61 Scholarship.
HHS ’61 classmates (and friends) can now contribute additional funding for the HHS ’61 Scholarship at any time as follows:
· Write a check, payable to the “Town of Hingham Scholarship Fund”, for the amount you are donating.
· Add “for HHS Class of 1961 Scholarship” as a note on the check.
· Mail the check with your contact information to:
Tax Collector
Town of Hingham
210 Central Street
Hingham, MA 02043
· If you would like your name added to the list of HHS ’61 Scholarship donors on the HHS ’61 website, send an email regarding your donation to
hhs-61@outlook.com. Note that neither the Treasurer nor the Scholarship Committee will notify us of your donation.
All donations to the “HHS Class of 1961 Scholarship” fund are tax deductible. And, your contribution is deductible in addition to the Standard Deduction if that is how you file your tax return (see the background notes for additional information).

Some background regarding Hingham High School scholarships:
· In 1975, the Town of Hingham has established a Scholarship Trust Fund whereby organizations and individuals can create and fund scholarships to benefit graduating Hingham High School seniors. The Fund is overseen by the Hingham Town Treasurer and is administered by the Scholarship Committee (appointed by the Hingham Board of Selectman). The Committee is responsible for managing and investing the funds, for selecting recipients of the scholarships, and for disbursing and acknowledging the awards.
· As of the end of 2025, 42 scholarships have been created with current assets of $8.4 million. In 2025, $375,000 in scholarships was awarded to graduating seniors. Since 1975 over $4 million has been awarded.
· Once a scholarship fund is created the Town of Hingham takes complete responsibility for collecting, managing, investing and disbursing the funds; no further involvement of the donors or organization that created the fund is required.
The Hingham Scholarship Trust Fund is a qualified IRS charity; all donations (whether in cash or from someone’s estate) to one of the scholarships in the Scholarship Trust Fund are tax deductible (for donations of $250 or more, the Hingham Treasurer will provide the required IRS receipt).
· Since many (most?) of our classmates likely file their tax returns using the Standard Deduction, the tax deductibility of donations to the Hingham Scholarship Trust fund may not seem relevant. However, beginning in 2026 the IRS has authorized an additional tax deduction of up to $1,000 for single filers ($2,000 for married filers) for donations to charitable organizations by people using the Standard Deduction. That means your contributions to the “HHS Class of 1961 Scholarship” in 2026 would be additionally tax deductible even if you use the Standard Deduction (here is a pointer to the relevant IRS publication www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc506 ).
